The portable allows gamers to experience 3D gaming without 3D glasses. Nintendo describes the portable as allowing games to be “enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses”. According to Nintendo, the product will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011.
Where Brian Ashcraft is getting this information is a little uncertain, but the idea isn’t completely out of the question. If you allowed me a moment to speculate, I would guess that the device uses technology similar to the tech demo that Johnny Chung Lee (now working on Microsoft’s Project Natal) put together a few years back for the Wii. While it isn’t 3D in the sense of things popping out of the screen at you, it does provide a level of three dimensional depth; as if the screen is actually a hole, rather than a flat surface.
This story is still breaking (and highly suspect in my eyes) so I hope we see more details soon. Until then, this is definitely a “grain of salt” situation.
Update: Story is legit. The full announcement is coming at E3. Press release here
