While Sony would have you believe that 3D is the future of entertainment, they want to be sure that future arrives only through Sony hardware, namely the PS3. In a talk with IGN, SCEA’s Director of Hardware and Marketing John Koller wasn’t too sure just what Nintendo had planned for their portable 3D device, and let us know that Sony is remaining focused on the PS3 as the 3D platform of choice.
“Our focus on 3D right now is on the console,” Koller said. “There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3, and we’re going to concentrate our efforts there.”
The most interesting quote came from Koller when talked about his uncertainty about the Nintendo 3DS and said that “8- and 9-year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.” So apparently young kids don’t like 3D? Someone might want to inform all the movie studios that are releasing all their CG kid’s movies in 3D that their target audience is not going to be interested. For Sony’s sake, I sure hope this isn’t the same research that told them the PSPGo was a good idea. Look I understand you have to downplay the competition, but can’t you do it without saying something completely stupid?
