Modern Warfare 2 Map Pack 1 Sells 2.5M, Free To Play Online This Weekend

From Joystiq:

Activision announced today that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2Stimulus Package” set a new Xbox Live record — clearly, mapathy had set in. According to Microsoft’s figures, the DLC pack was downloaded over one million times in 24 hours, surpassing 2.5 million units within a week. All at $15 a pop.

Look we can bitch and moan and cry about this all we want, but we knew this was going to happen, I mean just in sheer numbers we knew this was going to happen. It was the biggest selling game of 2009 and no matter how much the map pack cost of course it was going to sell this many copies. There are enough people out there just playing Modern Warfare 2 that $15 was no big deal for them. A $15 expansion is not unheard of.

Now on the PC side of things this weekend on Steam you can play the multiplayer portion of Modern Warfare 2 absolutely free! I wouldn’t be surprised if the game was also heavily discounted this weekend as well to entice players to purchase, but nothing has been confirmed as of right now.

I’m going to put my two cents in because Plachy and I were both posting this story at roughly the same time but he beat me to the punch so his stays up. However, we have very different takes on the story. So excuse me that I’m about to get all “ragey.”

$15 for 5 maps, 2 of which are remakes, is freaking ridiculous. For all of you out there who want to whine and cry about how greedy Activision is, you all just let them and every other publisher out there know that when it comes to a popular or AAA game they are more than welcome to jerk us around on pricing for DLC. For all the Activision haters out there that want to jump on the complaining bandwagon, this was your perfect opportunity to stick it to them and let them know that that pricetag was crap. “But oh it’s MW2.” Grow up and stand by your principles even when it doesn’t immediately work in your favor.

What a joke. Try and justify the purchase all you want, but you know you got ripped off.
