While reading Engadget’s live blog of today’s iPhone 4.0 event I didn’t think I was going to have to write up a news post, but alas this is some pretty big news. Apple has announced Game Center an Xbox Live like unified platform to be used in iPhone/iPad games. You will have one username in every game that’s under the Game Center banner. With that username you can send challenges or game invites to friends, get ranked on leaderboards, unlock achievements, and games can even utilize matchmaking. This is definitely going to leave services like Plus+, OpenFeint, and Crystal scrambling since we assume everyone is going to want to get on board with Apple’s version of their services. Game Center will go live when iPhone 4.0 is released this Summer for iPhone and this Fall for the iPad.
