3D PS3 Games Will Downgrade Image Quality

Alright kids, the 3D revolution is here. You just downloaded the newest firmware update to get your PS3 ready. You went to your television retailer of choice and plopped down almost three thousand dollars for a 55″ 3DTV. Time to get your game on. You pop in Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, one of the first 3D enabled games, but you notice something. The picture doesn’t quite look like high definition anymore. That can’t be right; can it? Oh, but it is. Due to the technical requirements of 3D, and the technical shortcomings of the PS3, games will have to be downgraded in order to process the image into all three of your desired dimensions. Basically, two images have to be generated, one for each eye. Because of the hefty amount of techno-wizardry that takes, developers have to scale back elsewhere.

So what happens in game like WipeoutHD, which originally ran at 1080p, is that it will get bumped down to 720p and run at a lower framerate. A game like Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, which originally ran at 720p, will be bumped all the way down into standard definition range.

Ok, so 1080p to 720p might not be that big of a deal, but it might be to those who just dropped a load of cash on a new 3DTV. But seriously, dropping us down all the way below 720p just to add a little depth to the image? Having seen 3D Blu-ray running and not being very impressed by it, this just seems like a bit of a misstep rather than a strong first step. We won’t know for sure until we get our hands on some of these games, but is this the right message to be sending to early adopters investing in your new tech?
