Reviewcast: Battlefield 3

Posted in Reviews by Aaron Leach (Mon, Nov 21, 2011)

Try It

Dave leads Aaron through the Battlefield, the third one. In fact, you might just say that this is a Battlefield 3 review. You could also say that it was a completely split decision between the two. It’d be ok if you said those things. Find out what was great and what was pretty much unplayable [...]

US Getting Zelda 3DS Bundle

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Mon, Nov 21, 2011)

Many American gamers were a little bitter over the fact that Europe was getting a Zelda 3DS bundle that came with a very nice looking Zelda-themed piece of hardware. Thankfully, they no longer have to hold any resentment toward our friends across the Atlantic because we are now getting the same deal. Beginning Thanksgiving Day, people in the US will be able to get their hands on the Zelda 3DS bundle

With this deal, $200 will get you a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D  as well as the special limited edition Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS embellished with gold Hyrule symbols in honor of the 25th anniversary of Zelda. There will also be a Super Mario 3D Land  bundle that comes with a Flame Red 3DS, but that’s nowhere near as exciting as the Zelda one. I guess you can buy that one if you want to be boring.

Kojima Talks Metal Gear Solid 5

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Mon, Nov 21, 2011)

In a recent interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, talked about the current things he is working on. First off, there is Project Ogre, which very little is known about. Secondly, he mentions that he has plans for… wait for it… Metal Gear Solid 5!

I know what you’re thinking: “But Metal Gear Solid 4 wrapped up so nicely. Why are they making a sequel?” The answer to that is simple: The series makes money. It already has a strong fan base, so they are guaranteed a hit with a new game. Sadly, all we know is that he has plans for the game. Here’s what  he had to say:

“I think we’ll probably have to make it at some point, but what that will be, we have no idea.”

He also went on to say that he didn’t think his involvement would actually be that significant for the fifth installment. What do you expect and/or hope to see from the next installment of the stealth espionage series?

PETA Scrutinizing Mario

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Thu, Nov 17, 2011)

Organizations seem to attack the video game industry a lot. That’s probably because it’s a newer industry that people don’t know much about, and people fear the things they are unfamiliar with. So rather than approaching the subject with an open mind, they attack it by any means necessary. So when we hear that a new video game is coming under fire for something, we just sort of roll our eyes. So what game is being put on trial now? Well, apparently PETA has a problem with…Mario?! Really?!

Yes, it seems as though the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is not happy with our Italian plumber friend because of the Tanooki Suit, which looks like a tanuki. PETA says that the games are giving the message that it is alright to wear fur. They even went so far as to make a game about a tanuki trying to get its fur back. However, they don’t bat an eye at the thousands of koopas (turtles) that Mario has curb-stomped over the years. So obviously PETA only cares about the cute furry animals.

Listen, I love animals, and I believe they should be treated in a caring, loving manner. However, I know games are games, and I shouldn’t get all riled up over a character that wears a suit that looks like an animal. PETA doesn’t know this. So It seems as though it’s safe to say that we no longer take them seriously, right?

Minecraft: Pocket Edition Available for iOS in New Zealand

Posted in News by Matt Luker (Thu, Nov 17, 2011)

Well, it had to happen eventually. It would appear that the saucy wench that is Minecraft could no longer keep its mobile relationship with Android exclusive. Yes, Minecraft has busted its iOS cherry with the release of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. The app is universal and is available on the New Zealand app store right now for  £4.99. ($6.99 in AmericaBucks) This means that Minecraft should be ready for you to feel up around 11PM EST tonight, so put on some Marvin Gaye, and light some candles. Actually, torches would work too, which, if I recall correctly, is one stick on the bottom, with coal on top on your crafting table.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations “Ancestors” DLC Info

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Thu, Nov 17, 2011)

Even though Assassin’s Creed: Revelations just came out, I’m sure all you greedy people are already asking for more. Don’t worry. Ubisoft has got you covered. They have announced that, on December 13th, they will release the “Ancestors Character Pack” DLC for $4 or 320 MS points.

Seems kind of cheap, doesn’t it? That’s because all it will get you is four new characters for the multiplayer (the Privateer, the Corsair, the Brigand, and the Gladiator) who all have “unique taunts, weapons, and stylized assassination moves.” The press release also mentions a 2nd piece of DLC, but it doesn’t go into detail about what it is. Whatever the case may be, both DLC packs are available for pre-order.

Modern Warfare 3 Rakes in $775 Million in 5 Days

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Thu, Nov 17, 2011)

We’ve already told you that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has made a lot of money. We just want to rub it in your face. In addition to the $400M the game made the first day of it’s release, over the next four days it made an additional $375 million. So, if you’re a math whiz like I am, you can do the math and see that in one businesses week, Modern Warfare 3 made $775 million dollars. This once again beats the record held by Call of Duty: Black Ops, which made $650 million during the first 5 days of its release. So, I guess it will be safe to say we’ll see future installments of the series.

Battlefield 3 Bans Dished Out on All Platforms

Posted in News by Matt Luker (Mon, Nov 14, 2011)

So apparently cheating is frowned upon by those fascist hounds at EA. This morning, the official Battlefield 3 twitter account announced that they are banning and stats-wiping “hundreds” of those a who decided to roll the ..DICE and cheat. The controversial glitches allow players to become invincible and rack up tens of thousands of points in a single round.

EA has also announced that they are still on the hunt and have a “zero tolerance policy for cheating.” I’m sure you’ve all seen Dog the Bounty Hunter, so I think I’ll leave it by reminding you; you have been warned.

Dead Island DLC Details Drop

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Mon, Nov 14, 2011)

Dead Island is forever going to be known as “that game with that awesome trailer,” but that’s not stopping developer Techland and publisher Deep Silver from putting more work into the actual game. They’ve decided to give us some information about “Bloodbath Arena,” the DLC that was pushed back so that Techland could still polish the main game, like with last week’s patch.

So what is “Bloodbath Arena?” It’s Dead Island‘s version of “Horde Mode.” Players get together in one of four arenas and kill waves of zombies in either single-player or co-op fashions. If you bought the special edition of the game, it will be free to you. Otherwise, it will be $10 or 800 MS points, and it will be available for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on November 22nd.

Modern Warfare 3 Sells A Lot of Copies

Posted in News by Alex Sanberg (Sat, Nov 12, 2011)

I know it seems like every year we write a story about how the  Call of Duty  franchise has broken sales records. That’s because they do so quite often. So why would this year be any different? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has beaten out its predecessor, Black Ops, by selling over $400 million worth of copies within its first day. That’s roughly $40 million more than the previous record and about $390 million more than I can ever hope to make. It took about 6.5 million units sold to achieve that hefty number. Needless to say, the people behind the game are very proud and excited about its success. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, said this:

Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere. I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”

Furthermore, to honor Veterans Day (formerly known as Armistice Day) and all Veterans alike, Activision is donating $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment. It is a non-profit, public benefit corporation that helps veterans find and train for jobs and was conceived by  Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. So congratulations to the teams behind Modern Warfare 3.

If you want to help add to the growing piles of money in their offices, you can purchase the game for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
