Alex’s Top 5 Games To Be Adapted Into Something Else

Posted in Pixelosophy by Alex Leach

Remember a few weeks ago when we revisited the idea of adapting different properties into a video game by giving you the list of what we want to see adapted? Well, we’re revisiting that again. Kind of. Only this time we’re going to scratch that and reverse it. For this round, we’re looking at the top five games that we would like to see adapted into another medium. For these lists, the titles that we chose can be adapted into anything, and when you see next week’s episode, you’ll really believe me when I say anything. Also, as always, you’re only getting numbers five through two. So, you’ll have to tune in next week to see our number ones. And now, without further adieu…
5. Heavy Rain
This one plays so much like a movie already that it was almost hard to include on the list. But I’m putting it on there anyway, so deal with it. I really just want to see this adapted straight up, same story, into a feature film. Mark Wahlberg already looks like the main character, the style is ripped right out of David Fincher’s playbook, and I think that we can all agree there is a solid story there that just got a bit bogged down in the translation. I may actually get my wish since the rights for this movie have been scooped up recently, but to be honest, I won’t be holding my breath for a quality adaptation.

4. Psychonauts
I know that Aaron won’t be happy about this one simply because I didn’t enjoy the game all that much. However, I do think that the world Tim Schafer created is one of the best I’ve ever seen in any sort of medium. The characters, the environments, and the premise would all make a fantastic cartoon. There is enough of a mix here to make kids and adults happy. I think that, as far as timeline goes, the first season could basically be the story of the game, and then subsequent seasons could follow Raz on his journey as a newly appointed Psychonaut. I smell a Saturday morning hit.

3. Mirror’s Edge
Full disclosure, Mirror’s Edge was the first game that I personally paid full price for on the Xbox 360. I absolutely love the world of Mirror’s Edge and think that there is a lot to explore there. As with Psychonauts, I want to see a weekly Mirror’s Edge cartoon. Obviously it would be a lot more adult, but I think that, visually, animation is the best medium for the material. As far as when the show would take place, I think there are a lot of possibilities. There could be some new threat, we could see the events of the game, or a prequel would be great as well. There is obviously a lot that happened in that world before we got there, so a prequel is what I would lean towards most. Animation would also be the best medium for all of that running and jumping. While actors and stuntmen could pull off some of the moves, it would never look right. Animation allows the unreal to become real, and there could be some great action sequences designed for the show.

2. Uncharted
This just in, I love Uncharted. While I won’t get into why I love the game too much, I’ll touch on the parts I love most because I would want to see them retained in a movie. I love the environments, the puzzles, the characters, and the stories. All of these are great in the game and would be great in a movie. What I would not want to see is a direct adaptation of either of the Uncharted stories we have already played. Those were great as video games, and I don’t think they could be improved in a movie. What I do want to see are movies that come up with new stories while retaining the fun vibe of the game. All of the characters should be there, we should get exotic locations, a bit of the supernatural, and the same pulpy dialogue and story as in the games. The only question that I have? Who plays Nathan Drake?

Exactly what Jamie said. On next week’s episode of Pixelosophy we’ll reveal our number one as well as our wild card picks. And trust me, you’ll want to see Aaron’s wild card for this list.
