Give it features that are very trendy at the moment! That’s why producer Rod Fergusson has decided to add the “niche feature” of stereoscopic 3D to the upcoming Gears of War 3. So now it can hold its own against other upcoming games that will have 3D support, like Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3. If you are someone who is excited about this news, I’m sure you can’t wait to watch Locusts’ heads explode in 3D at full 720p resolution. Well, here’s the thing: it won’t be full 720p. Fergusson says it will be “at five something” and that “it’s a little bit jaggier in certain areas.”

The reason for this is because the idea to add 3D to the game didn’t come until late in the development process, if you didn’t already guess that. It would have taken a lot of time and money to build 3D support from the ground up. Instead Epic Games made the decision to do a post-processing effect that ”generally works.” So, why would Epic Games add 3D that late in the development process if they knew it wasn’t going to live up to the standards of visual quality that we are use to getting from them? My bet is that they need to find something to do for the 5 months the game has been waiting to come out.

Well, lo and behold, it IS coming to PS3 (a detail we obviously missed). Not only is this going to make Aaron upgrade his TV, James Mielke, on the 8-4 Play podcast, said there may be even more surprises:

“It will definitely be worth the couple months that people have to wait for the PS3 version to get finished. People with PS3s, people with nice TVs, people with all kinds of control options… it’s going to be really cool.”

The reason for the release date difference? Q? didn’t get any of that MS money, they are simply handling both versions themselves, with a staff of 30 people. You have to appreciate that commitment to quality. The PlayStation 3 version is due sometime in September.

Instead, you make separate gestures, such as slashing for your sword, reaching back toy pull an arrow out of your quiver then shooting from your bow, or making a flicking motion to throw ninja stars. The interesting thing is that the person demonstrating it didn’t appear to have a navigation controller, so the game may be an on-rails experience. It also didn’t show whether any moves at all weren’t just re-skinned moves from the sports bundle. Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest will be out this fall.

Sony will be releasing a PlayStation branded HD 3D TV in an effort to bring 3D gaming to the masses. The television will be 24″ and will come with one pair of shutter glasses, a 6 foot HDMI cable, and a copy of Resistance 3 for $499. Additional glasses will cost $69 each and you might want to get another pair as the television can deliver two separate images to two different players, making split screens a thing of the past. IS $499 a low enough price to get you to bite on 3D if you haven’t already?

Along with the recent interview with Naughty Dog’s Amy Henig on the writing of Uncharted, Edge magazine also sat down with lead designer Jacob Minkoff to discuss the game. Minkoff expressed how awesome the 3D is in Uncharted: Drake’s Deception and believes that it will cause people to want to buy 3D televisions.

“People are only going to buy 3D when there’s awesome stuff in 3D. We’re making the awesome stuff that’ll drive people to adopt that technology”

While it remains to be seen whether the new Uncharted will drive consumers to jump onto 3D technology, I’m sure we will be hearing and seeing a lot more of the game in 3D at next month’s E3.

A horrifying nightmare that many of us feared has come true today, as Sony announced the worldwide delay of the highly anticipated The Last Guardian from it’s Holiday 2011 launch window. The game marked the first entry on the PlayStation 3 from Team ICO and the third in the ICO pseudo-trilogy. Sony also announced that the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Collection would also be pushed from it’s Spring 2011 release. Click the title for an official announcement from the game’s Creative Director.

Creative Director Fumito Ueda said in a statement over at the PlayStation Blog:

I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011.

However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.

All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.

I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for “The Last Guardian” for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.

It’s interesting to note the wording of “First Party Studio’s obligations.” Is Sony forcing the team to include 3D or some sort of Move support? We’ve seen it in almost all other Sony first party titles. If that is the case, it’s sad that that may be the reason for the delay.

In other news, The Last Guardian becomes everybody’s most anticipated game of 2012, as well as the early front runner for game of the year.

In an interview with UK gaming magazine Play, Ken Levine declared that his upcoming game BioShock Infinite will not be integrating Move support.

“I’d never want to throw in Move support just because it’s going to make some first party happy or because some marketing department wants it on the box because, at the end of the day, gamers know,” he admitted. “If you don’t have anything special to say about that control device gamers are going to know.”

However, on the subject of integrating a 3D effect into the game, Levine was a bit more open. “3D is a little bit different… it’s something I’d be more open to. I’m not saying whether we’re doing that or not but it’s sort of a passive integration. Unlike movies, you don’t just shoot it differently. Games are 3D.,” Levine said. I’m sure we will get a decent amount of BioShock Infinite news at this year’s E3, but until then, keep checking back here for updates.

The most notable is Nintendo with their 3DS which, as it turns out, is bad for children under the age of six.

Nintendo recently released a warning, and with the help of Google Translate, we find that there may be potential health risks accompanied with the 3DS. Since Nintendo’s new handheld generates two separate images for the left and right eyes, the stereoscopic 3D mode could have an adverse impact on a child’s still-developing eyesight. So Nintendo suggests you toggle the 3D mode off for the little ones.

Ocular health risks have been a worry for some time when it comes to 3D imaging and the way it tricks your brain into perceiving depth. Nintendo is just playing it safe with this warning even though there has been no conclusive scientific study regarding the issue. However, when it comes down to it, is it really worth the risk of negatively affecting one’s eyesight to get a fake sense of depth? You could probably do your own scientific study with your own children, but make sure you use your favorite child as the experiment’s control.

The Nintendo 3DS, which is already available for pre-order, is expected to come to North America in March 2011 with an estimated price of $300 (in Japan), but solid confirmation on those details is still pending.

Sony recently announced they would be remastering both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus in HD. It looks like Ico will get 3D treatment while Shadow will have to be content with being updated to HD. Both are also getting noticeable frame rate increases, making these classics even more salivating. When asked about the transition to 3D, a Sony rep said, “Sometimes people ask if the conversion to 3D is difficult, but because of the way the game was designed and put together, it was pretty straightforward actually.”

The tentative release date for the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection is set for early spring, we’ll see if they run into any additional snags while working on these titles. Until then, you can whet your appetite on the delicious new remastered screens below.
