Hey guys, I don’t have a lot to say about this trailer. It’s very teasery, lots of fast moving images of both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099. It’s less than 90 seconds long, but it looks real good. I mean graphically it looks really nice. I imagine Beenox learned a lot from their work on the last Spider-Man game which was mildly well received. Hopefully they took everything they learned and put it into Edge of Time. Spider-Man deserves more great video games.

We knew that at this weekend’s WonderCon Beenox was going to discuss the next Spider-Man game, what we didn’t think was going to happen is that Activision would issue a press release today announcing that game. It’s called Edge of Time and has you playing as both current day Spider-Man and the 2099 flavor of Spider-Man who non-comic book fans will know from last year’s Shattered Dimensions. Peter David who wrote Spider-Man 2099 is on board to write for the game, and the story has 2099 Spider-Man trying to do things in the future to prevent our present day Peter Parker from being murderized. The game is set for release this Fall.

WonderCon is a comic book and pop culture convention held in San Francisco by the same people who run the comic book and pop culture convention held in San Diego. At this year’s WonderCon which takes place the first weekend of April Activision will hold a panel to discuss Spider-Man video games. More specifically last year’s critically “meh’d” Shattered Dimensions. After they get done discussing that they will then show the first screens and video from the next Spider-Man game. Respected comic book writer and author Peter David will be on the panel along with members of the Beenox team. The panel takes place April 2nd at 4:30pm if you’re headed to the convention. Look for the news to break on the Internet shortly thereafter.

The trailer for Spidey’s latest outing has finally crawled (yes I’m full of bad spider puns) its way onto the Internets. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions looks to be a dimension jumping game that blends four of the different Spider-Man universes. This trailer shows the standard Amazing universe and the more recent Noir universe. What’s interesting is that the two worlds employ two different graphical styles as well with the Amazing world getting a cel-shaded look while the Noir-verse features a more realistically rendered 3D environment. If all four worlds feature unique art-direction and style then my hat is already off to the developers for putting that level of care and time in on the aesthetic of the game. Let’s hope the gameplay was held to the same standard.

My main concern here is that the trailer really seems to focus more on the Noir world with only a few glimpses of the regular Amazing Spidey. While I understand that making super-heroes dark and gritty is all the rage these days, Spider-Man is not a character that operates best under those conditions. I hope what makes Spider-Man such a great character is not lost due to the following of a current pop culture trend.

The trailer also teases that two more will definitely be revealed, undoubtedly to ramp up the hype leading up to the game’s release which is supposed to be in September of this year. What will the next two dimensions be? Your guess is as good as mine. It could be Ultimate Spidey, Marvel Zombies Spidey, Spider-Man 2099…as long as it isn’t the God awful clone, which falls under the Amazing universe so I think we’re safe there.
